Correct. Generally the probe is about as close to the base as you can get it. Actually I think ALL pots made nowadays come with the hole pre-drilled. Basically there will always be a delta between pot and CPU temps, but it is all relative in my book. Plus short of successfully drilling a hole in the IHS and placing a probe there is no accurate way to know real CPU temps. Just go off of the probe on the pot.
I will add that by saying the temperatures are relative, the delta and "real" CPU temps don't matter. As long as your CPU consistently CB's at -140c pot probe temp, do you really care what the "real" CPU temp is? I don't because as long as the mount is a good one it doesn't matter. It helps you absolutely zero to know that the CPU temp is -120c on the IHS if it also reads -140c every time on the pot probe.
