Default Just Ordered Some Parts....

So my grandparents who have lived in the dark ages without technology all these years decided they want to have a computer. So my grandfather waits in line for hours on black friday to buy some $399 HP They ask me to come look at it and it takes over a minute to open system properties.

Anyway, I talked them into taking that POS back and let me build them one that will be upgradable in the future. Here's what I ordered them..... Whatcha think? Neuromancer you think the CPU will be an OK daily driver with Win7?

Asus M4785 EVO m-ATX DDR3 board
AMD 545 Callisto Dual core 3ghz
Some 2x2gb Mushkin ram that I am going to give them
Thermaltake POS PSU, but it will work for their needs
320GB Seagate 7200.11 that I'm gonna give them
Acer 22" 1680x1050 cause it was cheapo
Win7 64 w/ Kasperky Antivirus
Coolermaster case cause they are nice for the price range

Memory and hdd's are coming from my stash so they are free. Total cost was $554. Links...... oh well I knew I was in way to big of a hurry to put those in there lol

btw the memory is 2x2gb muskin black 1600mhz 7-7-6-18 I think. Hdd will be a Seagate 7200.11 320gb. I really wanted to get a better quality PSU to throw a vid card in there later but damn they are expensive......

Looks good.

For ~ $10 more you can get them a quad core, which would help them out if they are going to start shooting home movies and encode them to DVD. Other than video encoding I would think the dual core would be more than adequate.

You can pick up an antec basiq or Earthwatts PSU for about $50. 430W would be plenty depending on what video card you intend on getting. I ran an AMD 920 quad, 4 GB of ram and dual 4850s on a 560W silverstone modular PSU. Once everything was OCed it proved to much of a draw for but a single 4850 and quad both OCed it was plenty.

Neuro buddy this was put together thinking of cheapest price, having an upgrade path (possible quad later), and free shipping if possible. I know there are cheaper cpu's but I wanted the L3 cache cause I'm a tech slut and want the best for the low end. This rig will mainly just be something for the grandparents to learn on and for the younger grandkids to have something to do when they are over.

I do have a 12 year old cousing who loves xbox so I was thinking about eventually slapping either a 4770, 4850 or one of my 4870's in there so he can game a little on it. If I find a good price on a larger PSU I might use it on my 24/7 rig, slap my antec 650w true power in this one and maybe use the little one on a file server or something.

650W will still be overkill, when hte PC is not loaded you will only be consuming about 100W which falls well outside the efficiency curve. But it does leave room for upgrading to a quad and whatever energy siphon cards will come out in the future
