What you are prolly talking about is a locked BIOS or whatever you want to call it that doesn't allow for overclocking there for not having the features you are accompanied to in your normal run of the mill BIOS you overclock in everyday. For instance a HP or Dell BIOS. At least that is what I think.

You would have to use an in operating system tool like setfsb or the like. It's kinda hard to keep settings on cpu's though, since there is no way to disable speedstep and cool & quiet on most lappy's.

I ran evga precision on a couple laptop gpu's... didn't get much out of them. it may be possible to tweak with eleet, but I haven't tried..... bet it's fun though!

IF you really want to push a laptop, yes you will have to use software to do it.

I would recommend if doing so and you are comfortable with it. completely dismantling the laptop though set it up on a desk and put some better cooling on the CPU and/or GPU so you can really take out the competition

Gotcha... that was a thought but wasn't sure how it would work.

Yeah, I might look into the software to do it.... Dismantle for better cooling for sure!

I was just thinking.... I have all this older HW and a couple of laptops lying around and thought it might be fun and good learning trying to do something with them. And maybe pick up a few bonus points while i'm at it. The day is finally drawing near yhat I should have some time to get back to thrashing hardware... And i'm trying to get really pumped and excited about it again.

I had fun clocking my laptops and finding out which one was actually faster than the others in as many benchmarks as it would run.

At the time, yes. If its a common notebook, theres a good chance you'll get more than the vanila .01 points. Either way, its rather interesting to see the 2d results compared to existing results at the bot.

I had to do what I could to get the benches to run as fast as possible since all my laptops were dell's.
