Default wPrime

Here are two wPrime runs. Both were done with an E8500 CPU on an Abit IP35 Pro board. Both were done at exactly the same CPU and RAM settings. The only difference between the two is the number of threads the benchmark was set to run. I ran both several times to be sure the score was not abnormal for any reason.

This one was set at two threads

This one was set at 4 threads

Yeah for some reason it runs better on 4 cores even when you have a dual core.

Here's a little better... but only at 4 threads.

Hey, that looks like good voltage bud for 4ghz on that chip. You might have a keeper.

I think it will go a couple below that.... I think I raised it up trying to figure out that BSOD issue I was having and never put it back down.

Good to know I'm not alone in this, I have looked briefly into this wprime stuff myself.

In Vista at stock speed my E8400 acctually had it's fastest wprime with 16!!! threads, consistently.
With a 4.5GHz OC it ran fastest with 4 and 6 threads. Couldn't really find any consistent winner, but optimal threadcount was much different than for stock speeds.

My point; the optimal thread count is different for different chip-architechture, and it changes with the overclock of the cpu. This bench needs a few runs at various threadcounts to establish where it will run best. Also keep in mind that you should run it at least 4 or 5 times. Sometimes run #2 or run #3 or run #4 will go considerably faster (~1/2 tenth of a second faster for a core2 duo?) that the others.

Just a heads up, on the i7's run it with a 8 thread count as it beats out the 4 thread count.

wPrime is not consistent (like all other benchmarks) only the differences are somewhat amplified because it's running 2, 4, 8 or more threads. I do have one team mate who swears by the over-threaded approach.

That makes two of us - I also know a guy who is an avid supporter of the over-threaded approach.
